REEF AND KELP FOREST DIVES

This two dive package is an ideal introduction to Cape Town diving and is suitable for Openwater divers. As with all our guided dives, our guide to client ratio is 1:4 or less for maximum attention and safety.

On the reef dive, we focus on a more exposed dive site and the kelp forest dive will be conducted in one of our many thick kelp forest dive sites.

The reef topography of Cape Town is dominated by granite outcrops with interesting walls, crevices and swim-throughs. These reefs are covered with colourful sponges, feather stars, anemones, hydroids and ascidians making them a photograher’s delight. Those with a keen eye will spot all manner of cryptic creatures sheltering in the robust reef life. Delicate spider crabs cling to sea fans and West Coast rock lobster line up in cracks and overhangs in the rocky reef. Nudibranchs abound and more than ten species can often be spotted on a dive.

Our kelp forests are gaining international recognition amongst divers. The swaying giant kelp stems are crowned with leathery “leaves” reaching up to the light. They have gained the apt name of Great African Sea Forests and diving between the kelp stems is reminiscent of wandering through a forest. The kelp forest provides a refuge for schools of fish, small sharks and rays and many species of invertebrates and crustaceans. Sea urchins, abalone and limpets cover their strong hold-fasts which anchor the kelp to the rocky reef.
